Single and over trying to mingle? Here are five alternative ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day

Being single on Valentine’s Day isn’t the worst thing that could happen, even if it feels like it with all the advertisements appealing to couples only. However, as a single individual myself, I thought that I would come up with a list of fun and unique things you can do this weekend to still enjoy the holiday.

Treat yourself and see a movie

As columnist of Hayley’s Hot Takes, it feels wrong not to suggest catching a movie. I take myself out once a week to catch the latest big screen offering. This weekend will be no exception with Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” coming out this Friday. Treat yourself to popcorn, candies and a little escape.

Channel your lack of romance into rage

If movies aren’t your thing and you’re looking for something a little more unconventional to celebrate the holiday or maybe release some post breakup aggression, how about renting out a rage room? A trip north to San Jose opens the doors to a number of rage room options, Smash City Rage Rooms, Break Stuff and AxeVentures. If you can’t make the trek north, a great alternative to a rage room is to safely smash plates. Get your friends together, hit up the local thrifts, write your woes onto some plates, put them into baggies and smash them! All the satisfaction of a rage room condensed into a mess free activity you and your fellow singles can bond over.

Murder mystery party

We’ve all been given plenty of Galentine’s recommendations through the years. Here’s an unusual idea if you’re looking to bring the escapism into your reality – and not just hate watching another romcom. Try hosting a themed murder mystery dinner! Invite all your friends over for food served with a side quest of whodunit. This still allows for good snacks, possible mocktails or cocktails, even costumes making the night feel celebrated and full of fun without the cute couply romance.

Show love to your community

Love comes in many forms, and on the day we are all told to celebrate it, why not do just that by connecting with your community, volunteering and showing love to your surroundings. Interim, Inc. is a local Monterey run group. Their mission statement shares ideas around, “…recovery, dignity, and community integration. We are the only agency in Monterey County that provides mental health treatment, affordable housing, residential treatment, social support, homeless outreach and support, and supported education and employment services for adults who have serious mental illnesses. Our mission is to provide services and affordable housing supporting members of our community with mental illness in building productive and satisfying lives.”

Currently Interim Inc, is seeking volunteers to help grow their gardens and prepare meals for the less fortunate.

Single but still optimistic?

Lastly, maybe you are single but ready to mingle. Check out the “Super Single Slam Sesh”  put on by LitMatch and OtterMedia this Saturday from 12 – 2 p.m. in the OSU rookery. This event will have a little bit of everything from speed dating and slam poetry to card making and candy grams! The perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a more traditional way, or – just maybe – meet your match.
