‘The Unwedding’ is a beautiful Big Sur mystery

Set in the heart of iconic Big Sur, “The Unwedding” by Ally Condie is a wistful and captivating tale that explores the importance of friendship, resilience and self-discovery in the face of adversity. With an engaging plot and relatable themes, this novel tugs at the readers’ heartstrings while offering a renewed appreciation for human companionship.

Condie weaves an anxious, inquisitive protagonist into a world-famous location to create an entertaining and worthwhile read. The protagonist, Ellery Wainwright, is a recently divorced woman who decides to go on her anniversary trip alone at the fictional Resort at Broken Point in Big Sur, where lush green mountains give way to cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. When a rainstorm wipes out the only bridge connecting the guests to the main highway, everyone at the resort is stranded. After two guests are found dead on the property, Ellery and her new friends set out to find out what happened and why. Condie masterfully combines multiple plot dynamics, showcasing Ellery’s resilience and hope in a dire situation.

This novel is Condie’s first adult book. She uses an array of character archetypes to provide contrast and relatability for readers. Each character in this novel portrays a distinct personality and plays a role in unraveling the secrets of the resort. Their interactions, marked by humorous dialogue between the characters, will have readers chuckling or tearing up as they turn the page.

The novel’s detailed imagery brings Big Sur to life with vivid descriptions of Monterey, the Pacific Ocean and tree-lined hiking spots providing a beautiful setting to contrast with the somber tone of the plot of the story. This contrast will keep readers fascinated for page after page.

Ellery’s journey of self-discovery is supported by the newfound friendships she has established at the resort. Readers will sympathize with Ellery’s story and appreciate Condie’s characterization and development of each of her characters.

A #1 New York Times bestseller in 2024, “The Unwedding” was also Reese Witherspoon’s Reese’s Book Club pick for June 2024. It has been celebrated for its strong female protagonist, fast-paced writing and outstanding storyline. Condie’s novel has a perfect blend of mystery, emotional depth and character-driven narrative, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a thrilling yet heartfelt story.
