Letter from the editor

Hello Otters!

I’m Paige Francis, the editor-in-chief for Volume 8 of the Lutrinae! I am so excited to be in this position and lead our newsroom.

I joined the Lutrinae last year, serving as the assistant editor. I’ve been involved in the newsroom since high school. After not being involved in a newsroom during my freshman year of college, I realized how much I missed it. Seeing the listing for the assistant editor position on Otter Jobs and deciding to apply was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Since joining the Lutrinae, I have learned so much about myself, and journalism, where I have found a deeper connection to Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB).

I am a third-year Environmental Studies major with a minor in journalism and media studies. I have always had a passion for science and writing, and working for the newspaper. I have found a happy medium that I will seek going forward in my career. The majors of our news team are very diverse, but we have all found connections through journalism.

Speaking of our news team, we have a star-studded staff for Volume 8. We currently have 13 staff members and have already brought in some contributors. Our staff are eager to report, photograph, and illustrate student life at CSUMB. They are also all incredibly talented, might I add. Something special about the Lutrinae is that you don’t need any prior journalism experience to work with us. We all learn more about this thrilling field every day, and we’re learning together, which makes it even better.

As student journalists we strive to report on the issues important to you, providing accurate, fair, and relevant stories. If there is an issue we have not covered that you believe should be, please reach out to us! You can email me directly at [email protected] or DM our Instagram account @thelutrinae.

I hope the Lutrinae can continue to be a place our readers can turn to for reliable information and fun content. We have a lot of ideas for this year and can’t wait to share them with you all.

I wish everyone the best of luck as we head into another school year!

Kindly,

Paige Francis

Editor-in-Chief of the Lutrinae
