It comes in waves

Poem by Andrea Valadez

At first it’s the kind of wave that looks inviting and make you want to walk in slowly just to feel something

But once you do go in, you have no choice but to be completely consumed

It happens faster than you expect

One second you’re admiring the sunset from the warm comfort of the sand

And then the next you’re drowning and all you can hear are the loud crashing sounds of the ocean

All you can do is surrender to the current

You don’t think you’ll ever make it back

But you do

You always find a way to get to shore again

And just when you think you’re free

The next wave comes and invites you in
