My Kind Shines

From the Poet:
“I wrote these pieces of art because there is power behind everyone’s story. Maybe you’re aware or haven’t noticed, but you are, in fact, a very powerful and important individual. Share your story. Don’t be ashamed. Through art or through any other form of expression, your story will inspire others.”

My Kind Shines

My kind are hard to find.
My kind go through hard times.

We shed blood and we lose some friends.
We are all alone when the day ends.

We come home to the smell
of tortillas, borrachos,
and grandma’s old perfume.

It’s night now and it’s real dark–
there’s no full moon,
there’s nolight in my heart.

Thinking is all I know, that’s all I seem to do.
I’ll be thinking about what’s the next thing I’ma have to go through.
So I think myself to sleep, convincing myself it’ll be alright.
That sparks a flame in my heart that lightens up the night.

The next morning I rise,
and the sun,
For some reason shines
even though the clouds put up a front.

So me and my kind, we shine too,
aunque muchos no ven what we gone through.
