Current students at Cal State University Monterey Bay have noticed many changes to campus dining options. One notable change is the Library Café’s new partnership with Cat & Cloud.
Cat & Cloud is a Santa Cruz-based coffee company founded by former baristas and friends Jared Truby, Chris Baca and Charles Jack. Launched in September 2016, Cat & Cloud coffee products have become a staple in Santa Cruz and a popular spot for many locals.
This partnership was soft launched in April during the Cat & Cloud Takeover event in the library and implemented this year.
Associate Executive Director of University Corporation, Maddison Burton said, “This partnership lets us bring locally roasted, premium-quality coffee and drinks to campus, along with the welcoming and energetic Cat & Cloud experience.”
CSUMB’s officially contracted food service vendor Chartwells will continue to operate, staff and provide food and other beverages to the café. The partnership allows the university to deepen local Central Coast connections and foster community on University grounds.
“It gives students another place to feel proud of—one where they can support a local brand with a sustainability focus, grab great coffee, study, spend time with friends and make genuine connections,” Burton said.
Many students are excited about the changes the Library Café is implementing, such as the new mural by Nick Vargas. One of many is Maggie Carriles, a third-year CSUMB student who frequents the café often because of its central location on campus.
“I recommend it to others because it’s more organized and better quality,” said Carriles.
Meal plan holders are still able to use both dining dollars and a meal exchange at the cafe. Meal exchange includes getting a small iced coffee or a drip coffee with a pastry.
