Five cozy bookstores to explore this weekend

By Kaelin Navarro

Free time is something that is hard to come by these days. When the opportunity finally presents itself, we want to use it to its fullest. Sometimes visiting a local bookstore can fulfill this role perfectly. It’s even better when these bookstores connect us to other parts of our community that make us feel a part of something, if only for the weekend. From learning about local history to finding new cafe spots, these bookstores have something for everyone.

For your solitary adventure or if you want to bring a friend, here are five bookstores for your weekend.

Want to visit Oldtown Salinas and like a friendly atmosphere?

Try Downtown Book and Sound! They have everything from new and trending books to manga classics. This bookstore has an old-feel to it with a warm and cozy atmosphere to match. They also spotlight local authors by hosting book release parties and other events to engage with the Salinas book community.

Are you a record lover and read on the go?

Try Lighthouse Books in Monterey! This bookstore primarily sells used books, with most being mass market pocket editions convenient for taking along in a work bag or backpack. This bookstore is jam packed with bookshelves from floor to ceiling that feel neverending. Right next door is Recycled Records, a small store that sells used vinyl, CDs and DVDs. Another perfect stop to check out in the Lighthouse District.

Looking for a sweet treat while you browse?

Try Bookworks located in Pacific Grove! This is a cafe with a conjoined bookstore on the corner down Lighthouse Avenue. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for the occasional people-watch or when you need a last minute assignment done. Their bookstore is small, yet cozy with their selection being easy to peruse. They sell new and trending books with topics like YA fiction, classics and fantasy.

Need something close to campus and want to actively help the community?

Try the Friends’ Community Bookstore in Marina! This is a small bookstore used by the Marina Public Library for people to show support through buying and donating books. They accept all sorts of gently used material as donations.

Looking for a shared love for reading and love buildings with atmosphere?

Try Old Capitol Books located in downtown Monterey! This bookstore specializes in local art and music while also having a genre for everyone. They host poetry workshops and reading groups for anyone to participate in. This building is also located in the heart of historic downtown Monterey. If this alone didn’t hook you, then hopefully the interior will. The mood lighting (in my opinion) makes you feel like you’re the main character in a story.
