The CLC is hiring!

Are you strapped for cash, or looking for a way to improve your academic skills and resume? Don’t look far, as there are job openings in the Cooperative Learning Center (CLC) beginning this upcoming fall 2024.

Tucked away on the second floor of the Tanimura and Antle Family Memorial Library, the CLC is a space for students who seek academic support across all disciplines. On March 13, an information session was held in the facility for prospective tutors. Around eight students attended and were met by a team of seven facilitators/coordinators who have varying roles within the CLC.

Some students went into the session with a clear vision of how they wanted to contribute to the CLC, while others were interested in the general employment information.

“I’m interested in doing Japanese tutoring,” said third-year Naoki Hashimoto. “I used to teach Japanese at my junior college, and I want to keep doing that. Through teaching Japanese, my ultimate goal is to teach English in Japan. Hopefully, teaching Japanese [at the CLC] will help my goal.”

There are several job openings available to students:

  • Five writing tutors
  • Three Supplemental Instruction (SI) positions
  • Two to three business tutors
  • Two language tutors (Japanese and Spanish)
  • Two front desk employees
  • One peer coach

For those who are interested, you can apply for a position on Otter Jobs. The priority deadline is April 19 by 5 p.m. There will be a job support session happening in the CLC on April 11 at noon; students can come to get support finalizing their application.

“I love working with the students the most,” said Valarie Maestas, the business and peer coaching coordinator. “People think of tutoring in sort of a deficit way, they think ‘Oh, I’m not doing good and that’s why I need to go.’”

She continued, “The way that we work and our approach in the CLC is really around collaborative support and empowering students to become independent learners.”
