Glowga at CSUMB

Students at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) immersed themselves in the relaxing atmosphere created by the All Community Glow Yoga event held on Monday evening, Jan 29.

This event was hosted by Basic Needs, who began offering yoga last semester to the entire CSUMB campus community, including staff, faculty and administrators.

The main goal of these classes is to provide a space for mental and physical wellness for students, at no cost. These classes are designed to be accessible to all, to best support each student’s needs.

The classes are taught by three yoga instructors: Robyn DoCanto, Daisy Moore and Valarie Maestas-Chapel.

“Often fitness classes can be expensive or inaccessible, so we wanted to be sure to provide a space in which any students can feel great moving their body, while practicing mindfulness,” said Robyn DoCanto, Basic Needs program coordinator. “Yoga is for everybody and every student is welcome to join us, regardless if they have practiced before or not!”

Every Monday brings a new and exciting theme to keep things interesting. These themes are inspired by having your mental, physical and social-emotional well-being fed.

This Monday’s theme was Glow Yoga where students were encouraged to show up a little early to add some glow-in-the-dark body paint to their yoga flow under black lights.

The theme was lighthearted and fun as a group of around 20 students got creative with their body paint placement while also focusing on their body and their mind’s health.

Each week will be a little different due to each instructors’ unique skills and yoga teaching styles. Val will provide sound healing using crystal singing bowls, Daisy will be focused around the moon cycles, and Robyn will be providing an intentional social-emotional meditative practice.

Community yoga is open to all students and other campus members. It is a no-judgment zone focused on nurturing your health and needs. There are limited supplies available so participants are encouraged to bring their own, if possible!
