The Birds are coming back

Bird E-Scooters that students have been familiar with at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) were removed shortly after last year’s commencement, and they have yet to make a return – until now.

Vickie Rahman, director of transportation and parking services shared that “[Bird scooters] are supposed to return to us maybe next week, but Bird says they have had a fleet shortage. We’re in talks with them. They are popular on campus and we definitely want, and fully intend, to have them back.”

However, how many scooters are coming back is still undetermined.

“It’s a dynamic number that’s dependent on ridership at any given time. Bird picks up extra scooters that are not utilized and adds scooters in high usage areas. Bird started the scooter program at CSUMB in August 2022,” said Rahman.

Rahman shared that from Nov. 2022 until Dec. 2022, the Bird scooters at CSUMB had a total of 2,359 rides, making it a high usage area.
