CFA practices their picket line: “What do we want? Fair contracts”

If you were on campus at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) today around lunch and heard chanting, there is a good chance it was the practice picket lines of the California Faculty Association (CFA).

Around 50 students and faculty gathered outside of the Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library to practice picket lining as a result of the continued bargaining between the CFA and the California State University system. Second-year Ally Evans was one of the students who showed up to make signs supporting the faculty and staff.

“It’s really important to stand up for lecturers. To work in education and then ignore the issues … [is wrong],” Evans said.

Another student who attended the practice strike walk was Pia Frerichs, a semester exchange student from Germany.

“Lecturers deserve better pay and I think it’s important that students show support,” she said.

The group chanted outside of the library before moving toward the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences building and toward the president’s office. They then circled back to the library before heading down toward the Otter Student Union (OSU).

By the OSU, they encountered a student who voiced their disapproval. “We want you guys to shut up. People are in class!”

The group wasn’t deterred by the student and continued with their drum beating and chanting before walking back to the library to wrap up their march.
