Men’s basketball loses, ending their win streak

The California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) men’s basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped, losing to visiting California State University, San Marcos 72-71 Feb. 2

San Marcos scored the winning layup with less than two minutes left. CSUMB hadn’t lost since Jan. 12 against Dominguez Hills.

It was a disappointing loss for CSUMB which is now 10-11 overall and 8-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. If there was any encouragement from the loss it was the fact that San Marcos is near the top of the conference standings at 12-3 and is 13-7 overall.

While it wasn’t the outcome the Otters were hoping for, the energy in the bleachers and on the court team elevated the game. Levi Franklin (#3) broke the lead with a three-pointer in the second half and fans celebrated in the stands, making a giant wave throughout the bleachers.

“It was great to have the fans back,” Franklin said. “The fans were electric tonight. That’s what gave us the comeback, I think.”

CSUMB came back with a 89-84 overtime victory over California State University, Los Angeles Feb. 4.

The Otters will be heading to California State University, San Bernardino on Feb. 12 to face off the Coyotes. For more information on future games, head to otteratheltics.com
