Local tasty treats: Captain + Stoker

Captain + Stoker is a beloved coffee shop to many locals in the Monterey Bay area. Originally opened in 2018, they focus on creating high-quality specialty coffee.

While their coffee is delicious, what Captain + Stoker distinguishes itself with is its dedication to the people within the community. Captain + Stoker works to support local artists, bakers, farmers and more to provide a positive experience to their customers, whether it be by a simple wave from a barista behind the bar when you enter or staff bringing a regulars’ order to them when it’s ready.

Their website states “We’re all working in tandem to create something a lil’ better every day, whether in our small community, or making the Earth healthier, one compostable cup at a time.”

They use their platform both on social media and as a popular hangout spot to raise awareness and address community concerns. Recently, they held an event at their Monterey location (389 E. Franklin St., near the SportsCenter) where two mayoral candidates and one city council candidate answered questions concerning housing, water and climate change in preparation for the Nov. 8 election.

They also recently opened a second location in Pacific Grove on 206 Forest Ave.

Captain + Stoker also has a one-of-a-kind aesthetic both in their shop and merchandise. Their name stems from parts of a tandem (two-person) bicycle, so naturally, they have bicycles hanging from the ceiling in their Monterey location.

Captain + Stoker has a variety of coffees and teas, with occasional seasonal drinks making an appearance on their menu. They also have a few food options, including assorted pastries from Parker Lusseau + Nece’s and four different types of toast.

The majority of their food options are either vegan or can be made vegan upon request, with a few gluten free options as well.

While any of the food from Captain + Stoker never disappoints, the avocado toast is amazing and quite possibly the best thing on their menu.

Any coffee lover should definitely check out Captain + Stoker if they haven’t already. Captain + Stoker has everything from some of the most kindhearted staff, good food, teas and coffee. The line might be long, but you won’t leave Captain + Stoker feeling disappointed.
