California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) hosted its sixth annual spring concert, Otterlands on Friday, April 29. Headlining this year was indie-pop band Smallpools and other performances from synth and dance-pop artist Xylø and Battle of the DJs winner, Fernando were featured.
Unfortunately, Fernando’s set was cut short.
The event was hosted by the Otter Student Union (OSU) and Associated Students (AS) in the OSU ballroom. Before the show started, students could enjoy pre-festival activities hosted outside the OSU, such as games, face bedazzling, food trucks, chalking, and sign-ups for CSUMB’s radio station, Otter Media, next semester. AS also gave out free swag such as clear fanny packs and t-shirts.
According to Associated Students Programs and Communications Coordinator Zach Simmons, over 350 students attended Otterlands, reaching their goal for attendees.
“I think what made tonight successful was all the students who came out,” Simmons said. “[We] could not do it and could not have all the energy without all of the students and all our volunteers who helped plan and put on this event. The students made the event.”
This was the first Otterlands CSUMB has put on since Spring 2019, when Bay Area rapper, E-40, performed on campus.
“We’re hoping to bring back Otterlands as a campus tradition every single year so if you didn’t get the chance to go this year, we’ll have it again next year, as well as hopefully other fun, hyped up in person events” Simmons said. “So be on the lookout for more things to come.”
