CSUMB students in shelter in place after reports of gun shots

An all clear for Monday’s shelter in place was issued at 9 p.m., about an hour and a half after there were reports of gunshots near the Promontory student housing. According to the Marina Police Department, an adult male was detained and no other subjects were located.

The male was arrested and transported to the Monterey County Jail for attempted carjacking, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting/delaying officers and violation of probation.

The Marina Police are actively investigating this crime. The Lutrinae is investigating student-made claims of people knocking on doors and windows in East Campus.

At around 7:20 p.m. Monday, a shelter-in-place was put in effect for Cal State Monterey Bay and the surrounding campus area.

The initial alert shared on the CSUMB Safe app stated that shots were fired in the area.

The suspects are involved in a potential attempted armed carjacking (the action of violently stealing an occupied car).

Closer to 8 p.m., an Otter Alert was sent stating an “act of violence incident” had occurred and told people to stay indoors in a safe and secure room.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol arrived to assist in searching for the suspect, according to KSBW.

At 8:28 p.m., another alert was sent out stating, “Officers continue to search the area for any outstanding individuals that may have been involved in the incident adjacent to campus.”

One of the Lutrinae’s contributing writers, Gabriel Oliveros, saw what appeared to be an arrest around 6:30 p.m. A man was walking through traffic with a traffic cone in his hand near a roundabout on Imjin Road. The man got close to our writer’s car and continued to move through traffic.

A few police cars then passed by with sirens on and got out of their vehicles, telling the man to lift his shirt over his head, and he was then tackled by the police officers.
