‘Thrillers and killers’ or ‘crazy, scary, spooky, hilarious’? (‘US’)

By Gabriel Oliveros Jr.

Over 60 people filled up the theater seats in CAHSS building, room 1401. Students and staff arrived well prepared with snacks and beverages in hand Tuesday night. The amplified sounds and eerie atmosphere of the 2019 horror film “US” – written and directed by Jordan Peele – filled up the theater as people munched on their popcorn, candies and chips.

“We were just talking about how, compared to last year, there’s a lot more people showing up [to Film Club Events]. There was a lot of people today, it was very fun,” said Sophia Balas, a fourth year cinematic arts and technology (CART) major.

This movie night and discussion was presented by the Film Club and CART 301. Unfortunately, the Film Club has been facing several legal issues for showing free movies, but an official statement about it will be released very soon.

At times the room would fill with laughter and other times with screams in suspense. The suspenseful and frightening film touched on serious topics such as PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome), trauma and anxiety.

Parts of the film were filmed at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Many people watching the movie were pointing at the screen in excitement as the scenes would reveal familiar monuments and attractions.

After the film was finished, a presentation was put on by a representative of the CART department WHO?  and Film Club Treasurer Seymour Seymour. Seymour, a cinematography major in his junior year, pointed out the various color schemes that Director Jordan Peele utilizes in his films.

FILM Club merchandise has been in development and people can expect cinema related clothing soon. “For the past few semesters we been trying to get all of our ducks in a row for merch…This year we are hoping to really expand our merch, so I am trying to organize the budget to fit that,” Seymour said.
