Offices located in Gavilan Hall are being relocated to prepare for the upcoming transition to student housing. Gavilan Hall is currently home to the KAZU radio station, Title IX office, International Programs amongst other offices and organizations.
KAZU, the NPR affiliate station for Monterey County, currently resides in Gavilan Hall but will be moving off campus before the end of 2025. The station will relocate to Ryan Ranch, where Cal State Monterey Bay’s (CSUMB) University Corporation (UCorp) is.
According to General Manager Dan Larkin, the station is “happy about the reason for the move.”
“The building we’re in, Gavilan Hall, is scheduled to be renovated back into dormitories because of expanding enrollment and the need for additional affordable housing for CSUMB students,” Larkin said. “While the move off campus is a change, we still plan to be involved with and have a presence on the CSUMB campus. We’re also excited that the new space for 90.3 KAZU will allow us to improve our workflow and modernize our operations.”
KAZU often has CSUMB students interning at the station and is planning on continuing this partnership despite the move off campus. “We are planning on continuing with the opportunities we’ve been able to offer students and, eventually, create new opportunities to learn and work with us, either on location, remotely, or hybrid, through podcasting, content creation, on-air/online hosting, digital and social media work and more,” said Larkin.
Larkin and the station realize that moving off campus could pose some transportation challenges for students, but they are working with CSUMB and UCorp to find an equitable solution.
The Title IX office that handles issues related to sex discrimination, sexual misconduct, harassment and retaliation will also be moving out of Gavilan Hall by next month at the latest. Raeshma Bedi, Title IX case intake specialist, said operations will not pause during the move. “We [won’t] have a pause or anything, a lot of our work is done via our laptops anyway, so it’s not like we would have a day or two where we won’t be working,” she said.
Title IX is unsure whether they can disclose the office’s new location at this time, as it has not been shared publicly yet.
The Extended Education and International Program’s office reported that they are expected to relocate out of Gavilan Hall in December, but do not know where the office will be relocated to.
