Breaking news: Student fees may increase Fall 2026

Student fees may be increasing by $467 a semester in Fall 2026.

According to the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) website, “the proposed adjustment is designed to expand resources that directly support health, well-being, learning and engagement.”

The university will direct funds to students’ most urgent needs and invest in strengthening the campus experience, according to the website. The website noted that student fees haven’t been raised since 2018, and this increase is in response to student feedback.

One of the proposed fees will go to “Vital Student Support Services” such as Mental Health, Care & Health Center, Care & Basic Needs and Disabilities (SDAC) Counselors and Testing resources. The “total scaled amount” for these three areas is $1,986,000. The amount is estimated based on current information, including enrollment.

To increase fees, the school said it will follow California State University policies and consult with students, faculty and other members of the community.

“We understand that any increase in student fees or the cost of attendance can be difficult, especially for those already facing financial challenges,” said CSUMB President Vanya Quinones in a prepared statement. “While these decisions are never easy, continued investment is necessary to maintain the quality of education, support services and facilities our students rely on. For 75% of our students who receive aid, the fee increases are estimated to be fully covered by financial aid or tuition assistance.”

School officials have already engaged in consultation with student organizations such as Associated Students, the Student Fee Advisory Committee and student club organizations under the Inter-Club Council. Town Hall meetings will be held on Sept. 15 in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences building at noon and on Sept. 16 in the Otter Student Union room 308 at 6 p.m.
