Surviving the night (shift) – “Five Nights at Freddy’s”

Welcome to Freddy Fazbears pizza! Will you make it to night five?

Released on Friday, Oct. 27, the well-anticipated “Five Nights at Freddy’s” film is reaching success, estimated to make over $75 million during its opening weekend. To put this into perspective, “The Exorcist: Believer” made roughly $26 million domestically and more than $44 million globally.

The plot follows Mike Schmidt, a man struggling to keep a job in order to take care of himself and his younger sister. While this is going on, Mike is struggling with lots of inner-turmoil. At his newest gig, he works as a security guard at the infamous Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Here he meets a new friend named Vanessa, and he also meets four frightening animatronic animals. However, once Mike’s sister meets these animatronics, he quickly learns that this job is more than what he bargained for.

I enjoyed the film, but I was not completely sold. Writing a film script for a lore-dense video game about a haunted pizzaria seems like an intimidating task, but I found the writing to be quite cheesy (no pun intended). I would give it two and a half out of five killer animatronics.

I will note that the film was a nice dose of nostalgia – when I was younger I loved to watch videos on the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” video games; I’m sure this same reason will attract the target audience of younger generations who enjoy the video games.

The film is rated PG-13, and I think this would be a great starting-out horror film for younger audiences.

The original “Five Nights at Freddy’s” video game was launched in August 2014. In the video game, players take the role of the night-shift security guard trying to survive four animatronics: Bonnie, Chica, Foxy and Freddy. The franchise went on to create 20 video games in total, with accompanying books, and now a film.

Throughout the film, there were several familiar faces. Josh Hutcherson, known for his role in “The Hunger Games,” took on the role of the newest security guard, Mike Schmidt. Mike quickly made a friend after accepting the job, officer Vanessa – played by Elizabeth Lail; I recognized her immediately from her role in the hit Netflix series “You.”

Plus, there were some faces from YouTube that made memorable appearances during the film. These names include CoryxKenshin and MatPat, both of which have played the Five Nights At Freddy’s video games as they were being released years ago.

The end of the film seemed rushed to me, and I was left unsatisfied from my original expectations. However, I was still entertained and had a good time reminiscing about playing Five Nights at Freddy’s in the past.

Next time you are looking for a job, remember to read the job description!
