Otters shutout San Bernardino in a defensive battle

Story by Oscar Jimenez

The California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) men’s soccer team beat visiting CSU San Bernardino 1-0 in a defensive battle Sept. 30 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

The first half of the game consisted of both teams trading back-and-forth shots, with a combination of misses and saves, until CSUMB midfielder Jose Madrigal (#25) scored a stunning goal off of a pass from forward Mason Ward (#11).

In the second half, the Coyotes showed they were not ready to give up, as they shot the ball at the goal five separate times within a 13-minute span. Monterey Bay’s goalkeeper Matthias Milton (#1) responded by saving three of those five shots, with one missing left and the other being blocked.

Both teams had an almost statistically identical night, except for each of the goalkeepers. Milton had a combined four saves allowing no goals, while San Bernardino’s goalkeeper Aiden Hanes (#1) had three saves and one goal allowed. The one less save from Hanes proved to be the difference in the match.

The Otters improved to 3-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Coyotes fell to 4-2-3 and 0-2-1.

The Otters faced off against California State University, San Marcos on Sunday Oct. 2, with a winning score of 1-0 as Colin O’Mahony scored in the 78th minute on a corner kick. CSUMB outshot San Marcos 11-1.

Their next game will be on Oct. 6 against San Francisco State. For more information on upcoming games, visit otterathletics.com
