Hops-pitality at Alvarado Street Brewery

The Hospitality Club at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) went to Alvarado Street Brewery in Monterey on Friday, Sept. 30.

For students interested in a career within the hospitality industry, Hops-pitality Night provided them an opportunity to engage in the community and network with an experienced manager.

Alvarado Street Brewery’s Director of Restaurants, Wendy Walker, shared her experience of finding her passion within the hospitality industry. At one time she was a college student studying hospitality management and business at San Jose State, now she manages Alvarado Street Brewery’s two restaurants in Monterey and Carmel, Salinas production brewery and tasting room, as well as Alvarado at the Pitch, located at Monterey Bay Football Club’s new stadium. To top that off, a new restaurant in Downtown Salinas will be opening soon.

Upon graduating, Walker leveraged her education, job and internship experience to land a job at Pebble Beach Company as a manager.

Although working for Pebble Beach Co. was once a dream of hers, she found the long work days to be more tiring than fulfilling. After being offered a management position at Alvarado Street Brewery she almost did not take the opportunity. When her friend convinced her to leave her position, she decided to take the job.

Walker expressed that her experience at Pebble Beach taught her how to be the best manager, but the owners of Alvarado Street Brewery gave her autonomy.

Participants stuck around to enjoy a beer in the Beer Garden and ask questions one-on-one with Walker.
